Director Facilities Maintenance

The Director of Facility Maintenance is responsible for providing support to the local distribution leadership team enabling them to provide best in class storage and distribution of goods serviced to our retail stores.  The Director will support distribution operations and facility maintenance leadership with the goal of improving logistics capabilities through strategic planning and leveraging best practices for the operations they support.  The position will be the direct liaison between local distribution leadership and the corporate distribution leadership team supporting strategic tactical plans and objectives.  The responsibility for this position includes:
 
Safety
  • Ensure warehouse safety standards are maintained to improve IFR (Injury Frequency Rate/OSHA rate) targets through effective injury prevention plans and processes
  • People Leadership – Develop bench strength in logistics leadership through effective mentoring and development of distribution employees
  • Quality – Establish and maintain world class standards for food safety regarding storage and handling within the distribution centers. Administer internal food safety audit processes and corresponding action plans to strengthen opportunities identified
  • Service – Support local distribution leadership with superior internal customer service by delivering on objectives and initiatives supported from the corporate environment
  • Cost/Value Efficiencies – Support distribution leadership to achieve best net landed cost to retail by continuously driving reductions in cost per case.  Works diligently to support the financial success of the individual distribution operations and region’s quarterly projection budget
  • Continuous Improvement – Cultivate a culture that focuses on continuous improvement through innovation, technology, and process control
  • Business Partner Collaboration – Optimize distribution efficiency through execution with key vendors, customers, and internal business units
 
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Perform analysis on safety metrics to proactively manage IFR (Injury Frequency Rate/OSHA rate) reduction trends. Ensure distribution operations are in compliance with regulatory and corporate safety policies, programs, and communication expectations including ammonia PSM programs
  • Establish food safety programs that are compliant with USDA, FDA and regulatory guidelines
  • Develop training programs for standard operating procedures pertaining to employee safety, food safety and operating processes
  • Develop business and financial justifications for major capital investments
  • Determine best practices related to investing and managing warehouse material handling equipment through effective life cycle replacement processes
  • Provide support to distribution maintenance operations to ensure effective asset management, energy conservation, environmental compliance and overall facility maintenance
  • Leverage technology/understanding of the distribution systems including WMS and CMMS platforms
  • Support the plans and activities associated with the effective management of distribution safety, quality, performance, service, asset stewardship and cost for the facilities
  • Champion the use of lean six sigma processes and best practices to maximize efficiency, reduce cost and increase supply chain value in warehousing operations
  • Execute Logistics’ strategic and tactical plan for improving key KPI
  • Support the distribution operations in the implementation of effective mentoring and developmental processes to improve bench strength and prepare individuals for the next level of leadership
  • Systematically identify and reduce distribution waste to improve productivity and cost per case
  • Benchmark distribution centers costs and pricing to ensure competitive levels are maintained
  • Develop and support distribution operations with efficient warehouse layout and slot optimization best practices to improve facility capacity and labor productivity
  • Partner with all levels of management, internal/external business partners, vendors and retail customers
 
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
 
Education Level: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field; <or> equivalent work experience
 
Experience Level:
10 years of experience in facility maintenance management
5 years of experience managing people
 
Skills and Experiences:
  • Experience developing and managing effective PSM compliance programs
  • Ability to execute with speed and agility to achieve established goals
  • Experience in operating and optimizing operations through WMS and CMMS task management
  • Understanding of financial/accounting principles and operational budgeting
  • Proven experience in developing and managing operating plans
  • Proven ability to perform financial analysis of existing cost data
  • Experience in implementing and/or managing engineered labor standards
  • Ability to empower the workforce; build strong teams (especially within a union represented workforce) through hiring, developing, evaluating, training, coaching and succession planning
  • Proven ability to effectively manage accountabilities and measure to hold individuals and teams accountable for performance results
  • Ability to leverage thought diversity to identify and execute innovative ideas to improve the business
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build direct relationships
  • Excellent customer service focus, results oriented
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer skills, including Excel, MS Word, Powerpoint and Autocad
 
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:  > 50 % travel
 
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: 
Work typically performed in a temperature-controlled environment.  However, job requires work in a distribution center environments with temperatures ranging from ambient to minus twenty degrees
Sits, stands or walks for extended periods of time
Bending, stooping and twisting required periodically
Spends long periods of time at desk or computer terminal
Uses calculators, keyboards, telephone, and other office equipment in the course of normal workday
Workday is fast paced, some evening and weekend work may be required
